Heritage Tourism

According to USA Today genealogy is currently the second most popular hobby in the United States. The first? Gardening.

Today, many families are combining their love of family history with a desire to travel. Our ancestors seem to come alive when we can visit where they lived, worked, and were laid to rest.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines cultural heritage tourism as “traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present.”

Clark County, along the Wabash River and the historic National Road, was a destination for many pioneer families. Some stayed only a short time, while others planted their roots here. Marshall Public Library LOVES visitors and encourages everyone to visit our Genealogical & Historical Collections Department. We have many resources to help you discover your roots and visit the land of your ancestors.

Some things we offer:

*Historic plat maps dating to 1892

*Free copies of current county maps

*Printed directions to the cemeteries throughout the county.

*Binders highlighting each township and community in the county

*Church histories
