How to Get a Library Card
Applying for a Library Card
Each person age 6 and over, must have their own library card. The card must be presented each time when checking materials out of the library. Library cards are free of charge to persons residing within the Marshall Community School System, with the exception of residents of York and Melrose townships. (Persons residing in these townships must apply at West Union library for a card.) Proof of residency is required when applying for a library card. Persons residing outside of the eligible area are required to pay a $130.00 per year fee in order to obtain a library card.
Online Courtesy Card Policy
Marshall Public Library is pleased to offer one-time remote, online Courtesy Library Card registration for residents living within the Marshall, IL school district. This policy enables eligible patrons to access library resources before visiting the library in person.
Eligibility:
- Must be a resident of the Marshall, IL school district.
- Individuals under the age of 18 are not eligible for online, temporary Courtesy Cards. Underage patrons must have a parent or legal guardian complete the application in person.
How to Apply:
- Complete the Online Library Card Registration Form available on the library website.
Access & Limitations:
- Once the application is reviewed and approved, the patron will receive an email with their temporary library card number. This number will be good for 30 days and may be used to access the library’s digital resources, including eBooks, audiobooks, and research databases.
- Physical material checkout and full borrowing privileges will require a brief in-person visit to verify the patron's identity, proof of residency, and/or property ownership.
In-Person Verification:
- Patrons must visit the library within 30 days of remote registration to complete the process. At that time, a staff member will verify identification and issue a permanent library card.
- If no in-person verification occurs within 30 days, the temporary card will be deactivated.
Privacy and Security:
- All submitted information is kept confidential and used solely for the purpose of library account creation in accordance with the library’s privacy policies.
