For Teens Only - Tips for Devoloping a Reading Habit

 •    Mix up your activities: read your e-mail for awhile, read a book for awhile, do your homework for awhile. Repeat. Have snacks handy.
•    Learn while you read—the one does not exclude the other.
•    Read in small bytes—10 minutes on the way to and from school, 15 minutes before going to sleep, 10 minutes waiting for friends to pick you up. That totals 45     minutes—a good-sized Daily Reading Total (DRT).
•    Join a book discussion group at your school or public library, or online: www.ala.org/teenhoopla is a good one.
•    Realize your reading speed increases the more you read.
•    Realize that time goes faster when you are reading for the fun of it.
•    Read what you are passionate about.
•    Find the right book or magazine for you.
•    Keep a list of what you read and compare it to lists of Best Books, Quick Picks, or Outstanding Books for the College Bound.
•    Write about what you read.
•    Realize reading for the fun of it is a good way to relax.
•    Talk about your reading with friends and family.

Teen Advisory Board

The library's Teen Advisory Board assists will projects and helps the library staff make the library more attractive to youth.  They assist with children's programming in the summer and occasionally hold book discussions. It's a great way to be involved with the library and the community while having fun with your peers.

TAB meets monthly at the library.  When the school year begins, a new set of officers will be elected and a meeting schedule will be set.  Alissa Tipton and Gloria Moore work with TAB to develop ideas for programs and activities.   For more information on TAB, please contact the library.
